Canal Quays

Cape Town’s foreshore is a hive of activity as Roggebaai Canal sees the launch of another luxury development. The Canal Precinct is rapidly emerging as a popular location for upmarket apartments. By the looks of things, the once-forgotten stretch of docklands between the city centre and the Waterfront is aspiring to gain a property reputation on par with Clifton. The newest addition to the area’s elite residences is being undertaken by Zwelinzima Property Developers and goes by the name of Canal Quays. The block, which was launched on Saturday 7 October 2006, has agents Seeff Properties behind it. The marketing is being handled by Adlab Advertising.

Canal Quays will consist of 72 units with various interior and exterior size combinations. Interior spaces are between 53m² and 222m² while exteriors range from 6m² balconies to 215m² terraces. Six duplex apartments with pools and seven ground floor apartments with landscaped gardens represent the cream of the crop. With two basement floors and seven levels, Canal Quays faces north and overlooks Cape Town harbour. Views to the south take in the CBD and Table Mountain.

Design is a key aspect of the Canal Quays development and architects Dennis Fabian Berman have given the building a fresh flavour guided by their concern for natural light and ventilation. A Cape Town outfit, Dennis Fabian Berman was established in 1974. Having made their mark with the Cullinan Cape Town Waterfront Hotel in 1998, they are among the Waterfront area’s signature architects. Doing the inside job, designers Hot Cocoa have come up with a concept that gives buyers the opportunity to define their space with a choice of three interior themes dubbed “cool,” “sensual,” and “hot.” Air-conditioning and sound-proofing will round off the creation of extremely comfortable living environments.

Canals Quays has amenities that have become synonymous with the luxury apartment package: security and parking, satellite television and Internet connectivity, and a recreation area with catering facilities. The building’s unique location, however, is its biggest drawcard. Accessible from both the city and the Waterfront and close to winelands and False Bay arteries, getting to and from the Canal Precinct is fairly easy. What’s more, the development has marina appeal. While much speculation surrounds the future of the Roggebaai Canal, property spindoctors suggest that the docklands waterway is in store for a vibrant future as Cape Town harbour gains status on the international yachting scene.
